How is it judged?

Bands will be judged in several categories:

  • Musicianship - How well do you play? Is your material musically or vocally challenging?
  • SHOWMANSHIP - Are you entertaining to watch or lumps on logs?
  • Workmanship - How well do you work together as a band?
  • Ministry- Does your "Christian Music" offer anything in a ministry manner?

There will be a panel of judges as well as an audience level of excitement for your band. Therefore, the more people that you bring that cheer you on, the better your score!

How did it start?

Hey there, Darin Warren here. Here's a little tale of how this whole thing, this Battle of the bands came to be. Some time ago, back in early 2007 I believe. The band I was playing with, Radical Departure played a Coffee House at our church. Afterwards, a friend of Rachel's (the singer) suggested that it would be fun if we had a little battle of the bands. That short conversation was the spark that started this forest fire. Within days I was imagining all of what this could be. I approached some young (my daughters) new players, and asked them if they'd be interested in putting a band together to play a battle of the bands. They were, and did. It then gave me the idea that this is a great motivator for young, and perhaps not so young players to put down the game controller, and the texting cell phone (yep, that's a stretch) and start practicing for SOMETHING. That got me to thinking there must be allot more young newbie players around, and with the right motivation, would get serious about music. Particularly Christian and Worship music. At 42, I can see that there is a need to foster the next generation of worship leaders. And since God has giving me a measure of “talent”, I am obligated, and happy to grow that for Him. To that end, I have started offering Free guitar lessons to anyone willing to commit to practicing hard, and getting involved in a worship team as soon as they are able. I also encourage you to do the same. Pass on what God has blessed you with. It's a small investment in time that will pay great dividends in the next generation of worship leaders. So while this Battle of the Bands is a whole big bunch of goofy fun and fellowship with 50 other Christian musicians. It's also, and more importantly an opportunity for young-new musicians to get on a stage in front of a bunch of people and thrown down their chops and also lead worship for 15 minutes. And when it all over, hopefully they'll see how good it can be, being used by God in this way. The main purpose of the Battle of the bands isn't to see who's the best, but to encourage Christian musician to do their best, for God. May God bless this event, and may Christians be encouraged to use their talents for God from it.
